Homosexual behavior is a sin.

Yes, it is because the Bible tells us so. If we outsource away from the Bible to view this problem, we are no longer servants of God. In this postmodern era the devil deceives people, especially church leaders, to rely on their political correctness and humanistic preference instead of biblical principles. The entire biblical data condemns it from cover to cover. If the Bible doesn’t have the authority on this issue, the foundation of our faith and principles would be shaken, and finally we will lose salvation.

Leviticus 18:22 You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.

God gives human beings sexual power for regeneration, pleasure and binding. But it must be balanced with duties and restrictions. Leviticus 18 has the list of cans and cannots. Homosexuality was singled out as a sin. It is not new but deeply rooted in history.

Romans 1:27 and in the same way also the men, giving up natural intercourse with women, were consumed with passion for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the due penalty for their error.

Thanks to the strict Jewish laws, homosexuality was restrained among the Jews. Perhaps that is why Jesus did not mention it. Roman churches were infected by a corrupting society. Homosexual problems had to be addressed. There is a due penalty attached.

1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived! Fornicators, idolaters, adulterers, male prostitutes, sodomites, thieves, the greedy, drunkards, revilers, robbers– none of these will inherit the kingdom of God.

This problem at the Corinthian churches had to be addressed. The audience was Christians. Gay behavior is listed among many other sins. Repentance is the only way to lead to forgiveness and healing.

Jude 1:7 Likewise, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding cities, which in the same manner as they indulged in sexual immorality and pursued unnatural lust, serve as an example by undergoing a punishment of eternal fire.

Sodom and Gomorrah were condemned for their violent homosexual behavior. Billy Graham once said that if homosexuality is not a sin, God has to apologize to the two cities someday. God’s warning is for those who have an ear to hear. There will be eternal fire waiting for those who want to reinstate those two sin cities. Likewise, any practicing homosexual should be excluded from church leadership.

There is a flood of homosexual issues within and without the church. Why?

This country and the people take pride in their freedom. The history of this nation shows that whenever personal freedom conflicts with any restrictions of tradition, or status quo, personal freedom will prevail eventually. Any pre-established tradition will give in to the outcry for freedom. Like children who always push the limit to break the rule of their parents, Americans like to push the boundaries that were set even by God.  Personal freedom cries to break through any restrictions. Just like Lot did in Genesis 13:12 “Abram settled in the land of Canaan, while Lot settled among the cities of the Plain and moved his tent as far as Sodom.” Yard by yard, Lot arrived at Sodom finally.

2 Timothy 4:3-4 For the time is coming when people will not put up with sound doctrine, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own desires, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander away to myths.

In this indulgent and self-centered age, the ELCA is a trailer of the liberal tendency of  the world, instead of being salt and light of the world. Let us uphold the authority of the Holy Scripture faithfully and continue to preach the Gospel to the sick and the sinful.

Timeline of the election of a gay bishop:

2009 — The national assembly of the ELCA voted for the gay ordination — Deguiltization.

2010 — Guy Erwin took the advantage of the change and began to seek ELCA ordination.

2011 — Erwin was ordained under the new policy.

2013 — Erwin, a gay pastor with less than two years of interim parish experience and little                       church credential was elected. A ROOKIE to be a bishop, unbelievable!

It was my fellow pastors and parishioners that put this person in the position of the bishop while other more qualified pastors were defeated because they were not gays. The only qualification of Erwin, in my opinion, is his life style. In this overwhelming liberal tendency of the ELCA and our synod, not only homosexuality is not a sin, but also a great political correctness, virtue, and qualification.

10 out of 12 Israelite spies voted for NO, and only Joshua and Caleb for YES. The louder voice voted for “Crucify Him!” Martin Luther was a tiny minority. The majority isn’t equal to the truth. No organization has the right to vote on the Word of God.

This insensitive and inconsiderate assembly went liberal too far by imposing a gay bishop over faithful Lutheran Christians and congregations. There would be no problem for gay people and any congregations to accept a straight bishop. But imposing a gay bishop upon churches violates and bullies the clean conscience of Christians. I have nobody to blame, but view them as a violent, irresponsible and disrespectful majority. I am not able to change the reality but I see more clearly the demonic and destructive power of liberalism in our education, politics and church. The liberal reject a Statue of Accountability in their hearts, therefore they worship the idol of the Statue of Liberty without responsibility. Remember, God is the final Judge.

Lutheran Church of the Cross, Arcadia, California, June 2013

I first shared this article with our conference collegium meeting with Pastor Maria Piava from the Synod on June 11. On the same day I shared with the Executive Committee of our church. Then I shared it with two more groups. In every group there were disagreements in discussions. June 26, the US Supreme Court stroke down two judgments in favor of homosexuality. The liberal trend is overwhelming within and without the church.

I expressed my stand to my church folks:

1.    I can accept Dr. Guy Erwin as my brother, but I can’t accept the leadership of a gay Bishop. I will not invite him to our church.

2.    I will resign from two Synod committees.

3.    I can possibly motivate our church to withhold our benevolence to the Synod.

4.    I can possibly campaign to pull our church out of the ELCA.

5.    The true dilemma for me is how I can avoid hurting the innocent and faithful parishioners and to maintain unity and harmony. As Hebrews 12:14 teaches, “Pursue peace with everyone, and the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.”

Among a couple exchanges of ideas, I find that people are misled to mix up two actions of Jesus: to accept and to approve. After one pastor preached on the unconditional acceptance of sinners like the homosexual people by Jesus, I asked him, “Pastor, please tell me does Jesus approve homosexuality?” He held on for a while and answered, “I guess NOT.” Perhaps, this is the key point that Jesus does accept all sinners but He does not approve their sins, particularly their willful continuation of sins. Jesus always tells every sinner, “Sin no more!”

The election of a gay bishop sends out a heretic message that a certain sin is not a sin, and certain sinners don’t need to repent. Therefore, the power of the gospel like forgiveness, heeling, correction and restoration is obsolete.

We all are saved and called to do what Jesus does: to accept sinners and not to approve sins.

  1. We read throughout scripture that homosexuality is condemned by God, so a homosexual is not without reproach. They are making no attempt to live a godly life. According to Paul, when held to just the first adjective in the above verse a homosexual/lesbian would be automatically disqualified from such a position as bishop in the church.

  2. The Rev. Canon Mary Glasspool, of Baltimore, was ordained and consecrated on Saturday, making her the second openly gay bishop in church history and one of the first two female bishops in the Diocese of Los Angeles’ 114-year history.

  3. The smirk on the face of this gay bishop says it all. ” I got em, follow me suckers, have I got a nice place for you! ” Probably the same smirk a pedophile has after ensnaring a child.
